Guess the fruit

Can you guess what fruit this is?
Now, now, before you start jumping at it, let me tell you the answer I got when I asked - "That is the original banana"

"The original banana"? What did he mean by that?

Well, apparently, most varieties of banana we get today, including the "Morris" and the starchy yellow californian variety are newer varieties. The *newer* varieties posses qualities that are different from the original varieties.

The newer varieties were 'designed' to be more meaty and starchy. Heres the bummer - Ever heard of eating a banana after food (Even restaurants serve a banana after a rice meal) - most of the commonly available varieties today do fit into this category. They do not have the benefits of improving your metabolism after your meal. Effectively, if you want to benefit and improve your digestion after a meal - you have to be choosy about which variety you eat.

The beauty above, apparently is very popular in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu as "Vazhai pazham" or "Naadam Pazham" or "Naatu pazham"(currently selling at Rs. 70/- per dozen - thats right, Rs 70/- per dozen) is highly beneficial for digestion.
So, next time you are out to buy bananas, dont pick the most familiar one, pick the one that really benefits you - bought any other way is a waste of your time, money and maybe even health.

I discovered this and many other tips (will write more in detail in a future series) from this old man who sells bananas in corner of the Medplus shop at Station Road, West Mambalam, Chennai - I recommend you visit this place too.

Healthy Living to you!
